21 Nov Why Updating Your Technology is Essential for Your Business
From the Office of Brian Jackson
Just a few weeks ago, I was able to attend the AT&T Business Summit in Dallas, TX. This event offered two days of technology-focused sessions with keynotes from some of the most well-respected leaders in business. One of my takeaways from this event was that technology is inescapable. You will continuously need to be update your technology. We will soon see an acceleration in processing and connectivity that will transform our business operations as we have never seen before.
In 2008, Blockbuster CEO Jim Keyes stated: “Netflix is not even on the radar screen in terms of competition.” His video-rental chain filed for bankruptcy in 2010. Today Netflix is worth $61.93 billion. This fall of Blockbuster highlights the importance of remaining current with technology. To stay relevant in your industry, you must understand and keep up with technological trends. It is also essential to know the extent of your customer’s technical expertise and stay on pace with them. If your clients cannot find you, your products, or your services because of technological deficiencies, your business is destined for failure.
The Equifax data breach also provides a great example of why keeping your technology up to date is essential. In March of 2017, US-CERT warned about web vulnerabilities discovered in the Struts platform, which could allow a remote attacker to take control of an affected system. The remediation for this vulnerability was to apply an available upgrade. Within 60 days of this public notification, hackers had discovered and compromised vulnerable web servers that hosted the Equifax dispute portal. Over the next 76 days, attackers extracted data from 51 different databases containing personal information of more than 148 million people.
For many small to midsize businesses, keeping up to date with technology can be challenging. Most owners are so busy working in the business. They fail to see how technology can be utilized for a strategic or competitive advantage. Lack of resources, cash flow, or expertise allows the day to day maintenance of the technology to fall behind, leaving them vulnerable to cybersecurity threats. Both challenges can be solved with proper planning and advice.
At Abacus Technologies, we do not want to see your company experience any of these setbacks by not updating your technology. That is why we offer various services and solutions to help keep your technology up to date and your business secure. Contact us to see how technology can contribute taking your business to the next level.
